Also%20known%20as%20Sodium%20Carbonate.%20The%20soda%20ash%20that%20the%20ceramic%20industry%20knows%20is%20a%20refined%20fine%20granular%20white%20material.%20It%20is%20very%20pure%20(99%25).%20Grades%20(light%2C%20natural%20and%20dense)%20differ%20in%20particle%20size%20and%20therefore%20bulk%20density%20but%20they%20have%20the%20same%20chemistry.%20The%20common%20ceramic%20use%20of%20soda%20ash%20is%20as%20a%20soluble%20deflocculant%20in%20ceramic%20slips%20and%20glazes.%20It%20works%20well%20in%20combination%20with%20sodium%20silicate%20to%20produce%20body%20slips%20that%20do%20not%20gel%20too%20quickly%20and%20whose%20rheology%20can%20be%20adjusted%20for%20changes%20in%20the%20hardness%20of%20the%20water.%20Higher%20soda%20ash%20proportions%20(vs%20sodium%20silicate)%20will%20produce%20a%20slip%20that%20gives%20a%20softer%20cast%20(stays%20wet%20longer).%20The%20total%20soda%20ash%20and%20sodium%20silicate%20amount%20should%20be%20tuned%20to%20create%20a%20slip%20that%20will%20eventually%20gel%20if%20left%20to%20stand.%20This%20thixotropic%20behavior%20will%20prevent%20it%20from%20settling.%20Sodium%20carbonate%20is%20also%20the%20preferred%20deflocculant%20for%20thinning%20glaze%20slurries.Soda%20ash%20is%20not%20normally%20used%20as%20a%20source%20of%20Na2O%20in%20glazes%20because%20it%20is%20soluble.%20It%20is%20used%20as%20a%20key%20source%20of%20sodium%20in%20frits%20and%20glass.%20Its%20solubility%20makes%20it%20an%20ideal%20flux%20for%20Egyptian%20paste%20glazes.Soda%20ash%20production%20goes%20back%20to%20ancient%20times.%20Today%2C%20it%20is%20refined%20from%20Trona%20ore%20in%20the%20US%20(where%20the%20largest%20deposits%20are%20found).%20The%20ore%20is%20calcined%2C%20dissolved%20and%20re-crystallized%20(other%20processes%20are%20used%20in%20other%20parts%20of%20the%20world).%20Soda%20ash%20is%20used%20in%20a%20very%20wide%20range%20of%20industries%20(glass%20is%20the%20single%20biggest%20user)%20so%20its%20chemical%2C%20physical%20and%20bulk%20properties%20are%20well%20understood%20and%20documented%20(General%20Chemical%20Industrial%20Products%20publishes%20an%20excellent%20booklet%20describing%20soda%20ash).The%20commercial%20product%20is%20not%20completely%20anhydrous%2C%20it%20is%20a%20monohydrate%20having%2014.5%25%20crystal%20water.This%20material%20is%20a%20textbook%20study%20of%20solubility%20physics%20(at%20different%20temperatures%20it%20has%20different%20properties).The%20light%20grade%20has%20around%2040%20lbs%2Fcubic%20foot%2C%20whereas%20dense%20is%20around%2070.The%20individual%20crystals%20are%20fragile%20and%20handling%20equipment%20has%20to%20take%20this%20into%20account%20to%20preserve%20the%20grade.It%20is%20not%20considered%20toxic%2C%20although%20micron%20sized%20particles%20can%20be%20generated%20during%20handling.Caking%20can%20occur%20during%20storage%20if%20the%20material%20absorbs%20water%20from%20the%20air.%20Information%20from%20the%20reference%20library%20on%20digitalfire.com%3A%26nbsp%3Bhttps%3A%2F%2Fdigitalfire.com%2F4sight%2Fmaterial%2Fsodium_carbonate_1263.html%20%26nbsp%3B
